As Labour parties internationally accepted the limits of neoliberal politics, parties to their Left have grown and emerged. From the Democratic Socialists of America to the Green Party in England, left wing candidates are winning elections promising real, substansial reforms to working class people.
Yet here we are in Aotearoa a few months out from an election where a deeply unpopular, racist right wing government should be facing annihiliation, but the “centrist” Labour Party is barely polling 30%.
Once the Labour Party promised Housing for All. The First Labour govenment in the 30s brought in one of the world’s first Welfare States, providing health and education for all citizens. All of these gains have been destroyed by neoliberalism- and its getting worse.
What would it look like if Labour was truly socialist? What policies would you like to see them champion? What would happen in the first few years if a Government tried to create a society free from neoliberalism and the dictatorship of the rich and the billionaries?
