Hands Off Whaikaha! Fund Disability Supports rally is on Sunday 26th May.
“The word ‘Whaikaha’ is closely associated with Maaka Tibble, a Ngāti Porou kaumatua, who has worked in the disability world for decades, including as a founding member of the Māori Disability Leadership Group.” ( Whaikaha.govt.nz ).
We must not let this word be stolen from us. It denotes the strength that disabled people have and recognises their mana. The Government has decided to take away all the gains made by disabled people in term of flexible funding and the self determination that Enabling Good Lives promised. The already minimal financial support that was there is being cut back along with cuts to equipment funding and housing modification funding which were already woefully inadequate.
Our education system cannot be inclusive while there is insufficient funding for teacher aides, and necessary equipment and supports for disabled children. We will discuss how we can fight back and share insights gained from Disabled people against cuts UK at our forum at Unite on Thursday 30th May following the Sunday rally.
